Halloween Part Deux

Today I had a few appointments…

First one was a big SFX job… my regular customer, Chris (who won best costume on Saturday at The Shark Club with face paint) had purchased four foam pieces that he wanted me to apply and finish.

We had originally scheduled the appointment for 6 a.m. but since neither of us had to go to work we changed it to 8 a.m.

The job took about three and a half hours.  His plan was to roam around town scaring people and then go to a club that was having their costume contest tonight… It is early yet and I haven’t heard if he won again.

This afternoon I had an appointment for a person who was going to be part of a haunted house in a town north of here… said to be scary and dead.  So this is what I painted for her… she’s wearing a veil (she’s a mourner at a haunted funeral home).

And another regular stopped by for me to apply a wig and a bit of styling.

Now I am sitting here watching for trick or treaters… so far 25.  They like the full size KitKats.

  1. Hey Shannon! I’ve recently become aware of your work & have become a fan! As a matter of fact, I’ve linked you on my website in my “awesome face painters” category.

I love your work & will be working on & off this year practicing SFX for next year’s Halloween. There are many face painters in my area that do Halloween face painting but few that do SFX. I have a contact with one of the biggest chains of Halloween outlets who’s agreed to hire me next year to do this at one of his stores. I’m reading everything I can, practicing, watching Youtubes, etc….

Your first design you say your customer had 4 foam pieces… were those already macabre pieces that you completed with paint & fake blood or did you actually sculpt foam?

Any advice you can provide will help me learn more about this trade.

A little about me… originally from Montreal, QC., I now reside in Tn where hubby & I operate an online business (not face painted related). I’m a grandmother of 8, 2 of which are in Ottawa & that I manage to see every 2 months (we’re sort of semi-retired). I’ve taken on face painting as a hobby but discovered a passion for it & am hoping to build it to a small business.

Thanks for your time & again, your work is AWESOME!

    Christine

    • He had ordered pre-made and painted pieces – the eyes, the mouth and two of the claw marks. They were really nice to work with – soft pliable foam with beautiful edges. I still had to colour them including painting the teeth, apply foundation after sealing them, add more colour in the wounds, then blood, etc.

The cost for me to custom make is pretty much out of the price range for my customers and there are really excellent pre-made out there now so a little shopping around can get them exactly what they want.

I can make pieces and have done casts to do so, but the cost of the supplies to do it properly (particularly when I have to have everything shipped here) is so high it really isn’t worth it.
