It just doesn’t stop…

I stopped by after work today to see mom.  She’s talking a lot more – sometimes in her normal voice but still a lot of whispering.  Fairly alert but her back hurts.

Yesterday her nurse said they were scheduling an EKG as they had detected an irregular heartbeat while doing their routine vital checks during the day.  So I went and found mom’s nurse when I got there tonight to find out what the results were …

Heart Arrhythmia – and, the specialist figures that is what caused the stroke.  The blood clot probably formed in her heart from the stagnant blood that wasn’t moving through the arteries in her heart because of the irregular beat…

And… stress and physical strain can cause that… AND… on the Thursday prior to her stroke  (less than 48 hour prior) she and I were shifting the refrigerator around to try to get pads under the feet (the contractors screwed up the legs and the leveling was off) and we were both straining really hard and almost killed ourselves…  I’m thinking that maybe was the trigger…

They are doing an EKG everyday and the irregular beat is REALLY obvious on the printouts.  This has NEVER been detected before – she’s always been assured that she’s had a strong heart.  And she just had a physical and the series of tests that goes with it last fall…

So… they’ve got her on a drug (the names escapes me at the moment) to open the valves of her heart to keep the blood flowing AND will be putting her on some version of warfarin to keep the blood thin so it won’t clot… this will be a lifetime thing.  On the up side, the stomach injections of heparin will stop once they start her on the other and it is oral and not injection.

At least knowing what caused the stroke lets them prevent another…

Now we just have to get her out of bed!  I asked the nurse about the toilet use and she said that actually with the heart issue that they prefer not to put her on the toilet as the strain can cause problems for the heart.  So until they get everything regulated and watch it for a while she won’t be using the toilet…

Small comfort, but knowing what caused the stroke and that there is a way to regulate it is making me feel a lot better … at least for the moment.

  1. I have had that thought for several things… just have to get it done!!

  2. Blimey Shannon, it does not get any easier? I am sad that the bloody pills have been shoved into your mum like that, its not fair and I can see you are furious. I would stick a ‘routine’ schedule above your mums bed, all the things that should be and should not be done, give a copy to your mum and get her to tick it off when it happens? including teeth cleaning! lazy nurses might pay more attention if they know that you are making a list…
